" I cannot conceive of my films as other than silent. My shadow appears on the screen as in a dream, and dreams do not speak" - Charlie Chaplin

Inspired by Told by an Idiot's acclaimed show Charlie and Stan - “Seldom less than magical” (★★★★ The Guardian). Speechless is a playful, intensive and provocative look at a purer style of performance.

Silent movies are still considered by many to be the essential form of cinema, yet British theatre is still driven by the written word, still fundamentally a literary form.

This 2-day workshop reveals the comic and the poetic that can be found in silent theatre. The performer is placed at the heart of the creative process, and through a variety of games and exercises explores key elements in the process of making theatre without words. By looking at visual narrative, internal monologue, rhythm, the resonance of objects and the use of music, participants have the opportunity to find detail and freedom in a totally accessible form.
