Summer showcase 3rd and 4th July 2012 at the Barbican
Back in September each school involved in the project was given a box by the Barbican and Told by an Idiot. The box was a catalyst to devising theatre, taking the students on a journey of how Told by an Idiot create work, all to be treated with suspicion. Each school has been developing completely unique performances based on the same stimuli and where this journey has taken them is yet to be seen.
The Barbican Box is aimed at schools and colleges bringing with it direct involvement with Told by an Idiot practitioners, CPD training, in school mentoring and a performance at the Barbican. The Box and its contents are curated by Told by an Idiot and will encourage theatre making through playful, physical and inventive devised work in 10-12 schools in Hackney during the current academic year.
The box is a catalyst to devising theatre. It takes the students on a journey of how Told by an Idiot create work. It should all be treated with suspicion. Each school will develop completely unique performances from the same stimuli as each of their journeys with the Box takes them to different places.
The teachers involved have participated in a CPD weekend at the Barbican run by Paul Hunter and designer Michael Vale, met their school’s Idiot practitioner, been let loose to their schools with their box and are now well on their way to creating their pieces from the ingredient and provocations their box holds. Visits have been made from their Idiot practitioner to encourage them to delve further, play more and never think it's over as they prepare to share with us where their work over the last five months have taken them.
The Barbican Box project has two private showcases at the Barbican, the first with one half the schools taking place in March, and the second with the other half of the schools taking place in July 2012.
